March 9, 2011
Another wonderful day in my life as I saw clients all morning and finished up around noon! Very productive morning and then I headed out to west Knoxville to the Healthe Shoppe...Eddie Reymond's place! I bought some 2+1+1 Recovery Drink...which I swear by...I am a Beachbody coach and I can tell you their recovery drink does not do for my body what this drink does! If I drink it after my workouts or long runs...my soreness is pretty much gone! All the elite runners in our area drink it and swear by it! I also purchased some Magnesium Oil to rub on my calves and thighs after long runs...Eddie says this is good stuff and would also help with any soreness I might have after my long runs! Its a rub that goes on like lotion with no smell and not greasy so I said I will try it...here is the kewl thing...your body needs magnesium for 300 different functions (google it) most people dont get enough of it...I think I do but this sure won't hurt! Below is a good list for you of magnesium sources!
*DV = Daily Value. DVs are reference numbers developed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to help consumers determine if a food contains a lot or a little of a specific nutrient. The DV for magnesium is 400 milligrams (mg). Most food labels do not list a food's magnesium content. The percent DV (%DV) listed on the table above indicates the percentage of the DV provided in one serving. A food providing 5% of the DV or less per serving is a low source while a food that provides 10-19% of the DV is a good source. A food that provides 20% or more of the DV is high in that nutrient. It is important to remember that foods that provide lower percentages of the DV also contribute to a healthful diet. For foods not listed in this table, please refer to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Nutrient Database Web site: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/cgi-bin/nut_search.pl.
Afterwards, I met up with my good running buddy Angie Wilson and ran a nice easy 6 mile run down the Knoxville Greenway and back to the Surburban center. Angie is one of my dearest friends and an outstanding runner. She challenges me and I challenge her! We have a group of runners that love to run together...Doug Dibb, Angie Wilson, John Smyth, Tom Deadrick, Dale Sawyer, Stewart Leonard, and Doug Swiggum...and what I have found is that running with others makes you better and faster! You challenge each other...I love these guys! We ran the 6 miles in 51.19...took it kinda easy today for a 8.33 pace...we kinda started out a little quick as we were 6.53 at mile one and at mile two we were 14.48...we calmed it down a litttle after that...LOL...the last quarter mile was a huge hill...and I don't mean what most people would call a hill...this was a total climb for about a 300 yards and up hill the whole quarter mile...me and Angie made a decision to push it and WE DID! Great job!
After the run I ran into New Balance shop and bought me a new pair of shoes I had seen in Runner's World
The New Balance Minimus...the shoe is less than 7oz and it is a flat...oh my it feels awesome and so lite! They totally feel like barefoot...I have a pair of Five Finger Vigrams already but this is a totally different shoe! I can't wait to start to train in these!
A late lunch with Mica at Panera Bread in Oak Ridge and home to relax!
Really looking forward to my Men's Bible Study Class at Panera Bread in Knoxville tomorrow morning at 7am. We are in the four chapter of Tony Dugey's Book...Dare to Be Uncommon! What a blessing this group has been to me! We are sharing our past, dreams, failures, successes, and goals....but mostly learning how to become a better friend, husband, son, parent, and christian!
Got a text yesterday I forgot to share with you...it was an honor! The high school baseball coach in our town...The Clinton High School Dragons...Coach Casey Taylor...texted me and ask if I would come and speak to his baseball team! I did play a couple years in college and was a pretty decent baseball player in high school and I'm sure I will talk to them about baseball but I can't wait to share my testimony with these young men! What a blessing to be able to share my life with a group of young men...all the bad things and bad roads I have been down...what ways not to live...As I say all the time this is just another opportunity God is putting in my life to witness and share how he is working in my life! I say this to a lot of coaches...and I will use Coach Wooden pyramid of success when I talk to them...it ain't about try to win games...its about developing young men to be the best they can be ALL THE TIME...not just on the field or court! Check out Coach Wooden Success Pyramid ( you can google it)...oh yeah as I have said...he won a lot of games also...LOL!
Peace

I promise not to try and write a book tonight guys...but trust me the Lord blessed my day from the time I got up this morning...leading me to a verse in the bible that kinda started my day the right way...Act 1: 7-8...basically saying that Jesus promised the disciples that they would receive power to witness after they receive the holy spirit! Often we try to reverse the order and witness by our own power..we must first receive the Holy Spirit, then he will give the power, and then and only then we can witness with extraordinary results! Witnessing is not showing what we can do for GOD but showing what GOD has done for us!...Well with that in mind...my day started!!!
I won't bore you with my business morning even though it was very nice and business seems to be picking up...different than in the past...it usually starts getting busy in the automotive industry after March 1st but this year seems to be a little different and dealers did a lot more business than they usually do in February...so YEA..YEA...at least I hope so! While visiting one of my dealers this morning I actually got to witness to an owner and a couple of his employees...LOL...if people will stand and listen to me...I WILL WITNESS...I love to tell what GOD is doing for me! Then my day really got started!!!!!
A few weeks ago I asked a person on Facebook to become friends with me...it was the wife of one of my best friends in the world (11 years ago)! And she accepted! Me and my good friend had drifted apart because of my divorce with my exwife and moving, etc. Long story and I mean long story short...he was probably the best friend I ever had until my divorce! I had not talk to him in 11 years! When his wife accepted my friendship I'm sure she was a little reluctant but she did so anyway (GOD had to be involved in this)! She watched me (I found out today) and after a while she ask her husband (my used to be best friend) to contact me! He did last week and ask me to lunch...I agreed! So we met today at noon...after several crying sessions together and sharing our hearts and past 11 years together...praying to start the conversation and meal and praying to end it...two and a half hours later we left O'Charleys....LOL! WOW how GOD has worked in his life and mine over the past two years...we shared our failures, trials, defeats, successes, etc...but mostly we shared how the LORD JESUS CHRIST had changed our hearts and lives! We remarked some many times how 11 years ago we would have never acted, prayed, talked, anything like this!!! We both agreed how ashamed we were of our past and how both of us we gonna do everything possible in the future to make up for lost time for GOD! My heart has been full since I left there today...I can not even tell you how GOD's perfect timing is PERFECT...had he put us back in each others lives before now we both would probably both be divorced and unsaved and GOING TO HELL! Praise the Lord for his perfect timing and his grace and love! I now have my best friend in this world back in my life...The Lord brought him back to me in his time and what a blessing it is...If we wait on the Lord he will always give us what we need and most times want!
Afterwards, a great workout at National Fitness Center with the meat of the workout on CORE...weighted situps, planks, pull leg lifts, crunches, jumping squats, and some back with Lat Pull Downs and Back Rows...then I came home and got ready for M and M Fit Club at First Baptist Church in Clinton! We did Cardio X from the P90X Series and we had a great group and workout! Me and Mica started this worked last June and we do it every Tuesday and Thursday night in Clinton...its been a blessing for us!
Great nutrition day...still under 2000 calories right now but I need to eat a little something...so I might go over but it ain't gonna be much over...I got to up my calories intake a little because I don't want to lose any more weight! This won't be hard...LOL!
Listen guys I hope your days are as good as mine..its amazing once you decide that you are gonna have a good day before you leave home how even if something does happen to try and derail...you can get by it...smile..breathe...and get back to having a great day! Remember GOD loves you and I love you. Keep the faith and stay the course! If I can do anything to help you in your personal or business life please let me know!
Peace

An 81 Year Old Guy Opened My Eyes Today....WOW!!!
Well my day started out really good...I got up around 5:15 which is pretty much normal for me everyday...I love getting up early because I can get a ton of stuff done while everyone else is sleeping! LOL...Anyway a great breakfast and a quick shower and out the door to see clients! Jefferson City, TN...Tarr Chevrolet and Farris Motor Company...honestly I know most of you guys don't think great thoughts about car dealers but trust me on this one...Bill Tarr (Owner of Tarr Chevrolet) and Johnny Wayne Farris (Owner of Farris Motor Company) are two of the nicest christian men you will ever meet...They both do business with the intention of keeping your business forever..both quality guys and that is an understatement...the greatest thing is they are both not just clients but GOOD FRIENDS...and Johnny Wayne Farris happens to be one of my best friends in the world! If you ever need to purchase a car up in this area you contact me and I will put you in touch with them personally...they will make you very happy! Then on to Grayson Hyundai/Subaru to visit this client and meet a new employee...Grayson is a long time client...a great dealer...and I have alot of very good friends there especially the owners and the GM Jim Viox (one of the best men on the planet)! Actually a great morning and I found out that February wasn't a bad month like it normally is...it actually was pretty good and that shows great signs for the economy with March coming up which is always a great car sales month...YEAH YEAH YEAH! LOL
A quick lunch on the way back to Clinton (in my car...oh yeah I prepare...see recent posts)...A whey protein drink with Chocolate Whey Protein and PB2 Peanut Butter and Perfect Water...a great shake...by the way...my buddy Doug Swiggum sells the PBS Peanut Butter at his store in Banberry, TN...it is awesome..its powder peanut butter that is half the calories and same protein...and its taste unbelievalbe. A protein bar to go with it and I was done...total calories for lunch 300 and 38 grams of protein and only 21 carbs...yeah that works!
Headed to National Fitness Center in Oak Ridge for an Upperbody and Core Workout and thats when my day was made. I was working out and cutting up with a couple of my buddies around the Dumbbell racks and talking about running when this guy touches me on the back and says hey you look like a runner! I said yes sir I am...my name is Mike Edenfield...He said glad to meet you Mike my name is Ben. He said I used to run all the time and I miss it so much but I can't run anymore. I said to bad Ben how old are you and he said 81! LOL...I said when did you stop running and he said around 75! LOL...He said I love to see and hear guys like you talk now because it brings back all the old memories of me running for over 50 years! He said I know all the courses around here because I used to run them! I thought he was so cool because as we talked I was doing Dumbbell curls with my 30lbs dumbbells and he was also with his 15 lbs dumbbells! We talked for a while and I listened to him...yeah the years were on his face and his body but the fire was still in his eyes! Ben (I never caught his last name) inspired me to have a great workout and the whole time I kept thinking about that Bob Seger song "Like A Rock"! It has always been one of my favorites and there are times when I'm working out or running and it comes on and I always love that line..."20 years where did they go...20 years I don't know...I sit and I wonder...where'd they go! Today I thought...there is Ben...he is 81...heck he is in the gym...most 81 year old people couldn't, wouldn't, or shouldn't be in a gym! Here he was working out....THAT IS WHERE I WANT TO BE ONE DAY...but you know what...YOU JUST DON'T START COMING TO THE GYM WHEN YOU ARE 81....Ben has been working at it all his life...thats the reason he is in the gym today and not in a nursing home, assisted living home, wheel chair, etc...my business partner says it all the time...we don't workout for quality of life now...WELL SOME OF US DO...LOL...but its for the quality of life in the last ten years of our lives....I say it all the time...get busy doing something...If you don't have time to work...you must have time to get sick or die! It's just true guys! I am so glad GOD put Ben in my life today! I did 140 weighted decline situps, 200 Dumbbell Bicep Curls (150 with 25lbs and 50 with 30lbs), 54 Pull Ups (YEAH BABY), 90 Lawnmower Pulls (50 with 50lbs and 40 with 60lbs), 25 Chest Flys with 25lbs, 70 Pull Up Leg Lifts, 60 Jumping Squats (18 inch stool), and 85 Push Ups (40 regular, 20 Diamond, 20 Decline, and 5 Divebombers)! After all that I went down to Oak Ridge Marina on the greenway and had originally planned to do 4 easy miles since I did 15 miles on Saturday but after I got down there and the weather was so nice and I had been so inspried at the gym I decided to do 5 miles...still kept it easy....39.38 for 5 miles...just a easy 7.57 pace!
My food log is awesome for today...as I write this I have only had 1578 calories so far and its 8pm...so I could eat another 712 calories tonight but I won't. I will probably have a Chobani Greek Yogurt snack in a bit to get some more protein but thats it and its only 140 calories! As of now I have had 1578 calories, 128.5 grams of protein, 170 grams of carbs, 48.5 grams of fat, and 42.3 grams of sugar! This is a great day but I do need to eat more tomorrow...I will!
Hey if you do want to lose weight or get in shape I am a coach for P90X...I can help you! Just let me know!
My day was wonderful...GOD is truly working in my life and I can see it daily with the people he continuously puts in it! I pray I did something today that would make him happy. If you don't do anything else tonight make a committment to yourself to do something everyday to exercise in some way, to eat right, and to ask the Jesus to direct your speech, actions, and attitude! I pray if you don't know my savior that you will let me know...Jesus has changed my life and heart...He loves you no matter what you have done...trust me thats the reason my favorite verse is 1 Timothy 1 15-17...look it up....if he can save and love me...he can save and love anyone! Praise be to the Father of everything!
I only hope your day was as great as mine!

One of My Notes From Facebook
I won't generally post a blog more than once a day but I thought it was a great time to post this on my blog...It was a note I wrote on Facebook last week...No I am not popular for my opinion of University of Tennessee Basketball Coach Bruce Pearl but I will not waiver...I do believe Character and Integrity mean something and I still think Coach John Wooden set the standard for all coaches college and pro! Google his Pyramid of Success and look at it...you could coach a basketball team, running a business, or love a family with it...the success pyramid would work in every situation...Coach Wooden was more concerned about building and developing a young man than a basketball team...oh yeah he won a few basketball games also! LOL...well here it is!
Bruce Pearl vs Don Devo...no comparison!

I think its interesting how most Tennessee fans forget about Don Devo and what a great job he did at Tennessee! Most want to think Bruce Pearl is the greatest thing to happen to the University of Tennessee since General Neyland! Well consider a few things!!!
Don Devo coached at the University of Tennessee for 11 seasons and finished his tenure with a winning record...no NCAA sanctions...the program was respected...during his tenure he took the first Tennessee team to the Sweet Sixteen in 1981, and 12 of his players that he recruited were drafted into the NBA...he also recruited and coached one of the four greatest players in UT history...DALE ELLIS (The others being Bernard King, Ernie Grunfield, and Allan Houston). In his last season, Devo was 19-11...another winning record! Now back in 1981, it was a lot tougher to get in the NCAA tournament but he still took a team to the tournament and played a great Virginia team! And oh yeah...guess what else he must have done a pretty good job...We opened Thompson Boling Arena during his tenure! Tennessee basketball might not have had the flair of Pearl but it sure didn't have the negativity of him either!
Now Pearl...5 years...NO NBA drafted players...he has not recruited one player that has been drafted in the NBA (CJ Watson does not count...he did not get drafted)...his shinning pearl...no pun intended...was Chris Lofton...who he did not recruit...yet even Lofton couldn't get drafted in the NBA! Yeah we have had some success but we have had our share of off the court problems also...not even counting the NCAA sanctions that loom in front of us! Are we respected by the announcers, NCAA, parents of kids wanting to play college basketball, etc....well look at our team...not exactly a bunch of stars! Now he has had his time to recruit stars...every team loses kids every year...its the coaching staff and mainly the head coach to replace those kids with incoming stars...fans say you have to play the hand that is dealt to you....he was the dealer!
This team is where its at because of Pearl...if its the players...well guess what...its his players!!! He says in an interview he doesn't know what to do after the lost to Mississippi State...hmmm...then why do we need him? Anybody salesman can paint himself up and sing Rocky Top and win a game every once in a while because of hype!
I think Bruce has done a good job making UT basketball excitable again...but I will quote Heather Harrington from the Sports Animal today..."Bruce Pearl don't walk on water"..."He ain't the only person that can coach or would come to UT to coach for that kind of money"! I agree!
The only thing I have to say is this and I have been saying it for a long time now....."YOU CAN'T COACH ONE WAY AND LVIE ANOTHER"..."YOU CAN'T TAKE THE STRIPES OFF A TIGER"..."YOU ARE WHAT YOU ARE"! If you are gonna live and act and be one way.....expect that also on the UT BASKETBALL COURT....AND OFF!
PEACE

March 6, 2011 A Day of Rest
I don't take many days off but after a great week of workouts, I decided to take the day and RELAX! LOL...I got some good hard workouts in this past week at the gym and still got in 3 nice runs...my first was Tuesday after almost two hours of Upperbody and CORE workout...I ran 4 miles in 30.14 and then on Thursday after an one and a half of weight lifting and CORE workout...I ran 4 miles in 30.13..same course one second quicker...LOL...not that I planned it that way! Anyway, then on Saturday I got my long run in...15 miles in 2:12:46...a good week! Read a great quote from Runner's World last night from Ed Eyestone (Two-time Olympic marathoner)...he said, "I've learned that whether you're a hard-core marathoner or a recreational runner, the long run is the backbone of a successful training program."...I sure hope he is right because I have been trying to get a long run in every week of at least 10 plus miles and trying to keep my weekly mileage between 25 and 30 miles. Also, learned a couple of other nice tips...I have always drank about 4 cups of coffee before a race because it makes me go to the bathroom...I know maybe to much information here but you don't want to stop during a race for a bathroom break...and I have always thought it helped me! Well good news...according to Runner's World...two cups of strong black coffee for a 150 lbs runner boosts stamina in both cold and hot temperatures! Nice to know cause I always thought it helped me! In the training section of Runner's World they suggested Cross training to help your running...well you know whats cool...all the exercises that they suggest are all in P90X workouts...WOW...I knew P90X helped but now I know it helps my running also! Lastly, there was an awesome article on LOSING WEIGHT...LOL...I loved it because its what I have been preaching for about 14 months now...it goes as follows!
1) Take Really Good Notes: Write everything down you eat...YOU BITE IT...YOU WRITE IT!!!!No Exceptions
2) Measure What You Eat: Count Calories and buy a food scale...You got to watch you calories like a HAWK...you got to measure your portions...Get a calories goal in mind everyday and stick to it!
3) Beef Up Your Protein: Most people don't eat enough protein...You need as a basic need 50% of your body weight per day but if you really want to define muscle, stay full longer, and cut belly fat...the try to increase that protein intake to between 65% and 75% of your body weight. Make sure you get your carbs in also...as a good rule your carbs and proteins should equal one to one until you can maintain a workout of an hour or so a day...after that you can increase your carbs as much as two to one...there are days especially like yesterday when I ran 15 miles that my carbs were three times my protein intake...its okay! A couple days before a Half Marathon I always carb up somewhere around 2 to 3 times my protein! The last part of what I said in this section is from me...not RUNNER'S WORLD...LOL! But trust me...IT WORKS!
4) Add Color To Every Meal: Beautiful Vegetables and Fruits...good fiber and low calorie...loaded with vitamins and minerals
5) Stop Grazing: Though I don't totally agree with this one...I do if its like most people and thats grazing several times a day and not just a little hand full of nuts or fruit...but a few hand fulls...LOL...grazing can be good but just a little something to hold you over to your meal...make sure if you do graze you do it with nuts or fruits (Not a banana) or something with protein (Cottage Cheese, peanut butter, Greek Yogurt, etc).
6) Always Have A Plan: Don't get caught leaving home without planning when, where, and how you will eat...IF YOU DO YOU WILL FAIL! Pack a protein snack or two and also PLAN PEOPLE!
7) Slow Down: Try to enjoy your meal more by slowing down when you eat...you will find that you will fill up quicker and probably won't eat as much!
8) Do Not Rush Weight Loss: A goal could be somewhere around 3 to 4 lbs per week...anything drastic will not be a LIFE CHANGE for you...it will be a DIET...You are looking for a LONG LIFE CHANGE...no more than 15 lbs per month! But whatever you do...DON'T GIVE UP!
Well guys...just finished watching University of Tennessee Volunteers get beat by the University of Kentucky Wildcats...at one time in my life that would have made for a BAD rest of the day...anymore I don't even care. I am no Bruce Pearl supporter and until the University of Tennessee makes a change at UT then I ain't gonna spend another dollar going over there to watch them! I will say this till I die...You can't live one way and coach another...CHARACTER AND INTEGRITY mean something to me! I'm getting off my soapbox!
A shout out to all my good buddies but especially my accountability partners Marty Hughes, Angie Wilson, Doug Dibb, Rocky Smith, John Smyth, Bret Warren, Scott Lewis, and both my wife Mica Edenfield and Mom Mona Stuckwish...thanks guys for holding me accountalbe everyday and make me a better person, friend, husband, business partner, and son! I love you guys!
Very anxious to get back to workouts tomorrow...busy day with clients until around 3 but after that I will be hitting it hard! Hope to start training Mandy Stephens...a friend of mine...for the Half Marathon on April 30th (The Kentucky Derby Marathon/Half Marathon) in Lexington, Kentucky!
Headed out to buy some fresh Veggie/Fruit Kabobs at Fresh Market and come home and make a nice dinner with my gorgeous wife! Hope all is well with everyone today! Keep the faith, smile, and always try to help as many people as you can!

March 5, 2011 Day of Fitness
Well today I was suppose to be in Vicksburg, Mississippi running the Run Through History 10K! But the trip was cancelled...no problem! I decided to get a group of my buddies together and run The Knoxville Marathon course this morning...Doug Dibb, Angie Wilson, and Doug Swiggum all met me at The Holiday Inn World's Fair site (The starting line for The Knoxville Marathon April 3, 2011) and we ran 8 miles down the front half of the course and then doubled back. The run went well...15 miles in 2:12:46 and then we walked the last .66 of a mile back to the hotel to cool down! Temperatures were awesome around 53 degrees or so and it was cloudy with spitting rain the entire time...PERFECT! We saw so many fellow runners out training and it was an enjoyable run. My buddy and best friend Doug Dibb ran with me the whole time and paced me through the hilly course. I felt awesome until around mile 13 and started to drag a little...still I'll take 15 and especially on that course...the last two times I ran 15 miles my times were 2:15:43 and 2:29:51...so today was an accomplishment! I'm getting stronger and I feel pretty good about my progress! P90X, Insanity, and Reb Abs have been a major part of my training but it is insane to think I ran my first race on December 12, 2009 just a little over 14 months ago! WOW!!! I have competed in 43 races since my first one and there is no stopping me now...WITH GOD'S HELP!
GOD has blessed my life so much over the past 16 months with health and fitness but mostly with unbelievable friends and a new relationship with my gorgeous wife and family! My life is awesome! I only wished I could have lived the first 45 years of my life like I have the last year and a half! Oh well, till the Lord calls me home I will stand up for him everytime I get a chance, I will witness for him everytime I get a chance, and I hope to please him in my efforts, attitude, speech, and actions!
Praise be to the Father
